March is the month of the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. This year we celebrate 100 years from the birth of the master of tango.
Astor Pantaleon Piazzolla was born on the 11th of March 1921. He revolutionized the tango, creating a new compositional style, tango nuevo. He wrote only one piece for flute and guitar, Histoire du tango. It comprises four movements, each one of them representing a different period in the development of the tango.
The second movement, Cafe 1930 follows the role the tango had in the 30s. It was not anymore a music for dancing, but the music of cafes where people would listen to it and enjoy it’s wonderful musical expression.
The third movement is called Nightclub 1960. The tango was again the music of the nightclubs of Buenos Aires. It is written in a beautiful manner, combining slow expressive parts with the „wild” parts of the south american dance.
The recording you will watch is a part of our project, Libertad in Tango, developed in 2018. Our performance tells the story of the tango, from its begginings till the tango in the end of the century. We performed several pieces, from which you will watch:
- Cafe 1930;
- Nightclub 1960;
- Libertango.
Our project – Libertad in Tango was awarded the 3rd prize in the ”Musik und Vermittlung” Competition organized by Hochschule für Musik Detmold in 2018.
